“Dear Mom,” the letter began, in a handwriting she immediately recognized as her own. She read on, her brow furrowing. The words were familiar, yet alien. Her younger self, filled with resentments she no longer felt, laid bare on the page.

She felt a strange discomfort. She walked to the bathroom and stared at her reflection. She looked older, somehow changed. She touched her face, as if expecting to find a stranger.

A headache began to throb behind her eyes. She needed to be alone. Now.
