He stared at the offending text. Sent to his ex: "This is a disaster. I regret everything." He’d meant to message his mechanic about the car. The error hung in the air, a phantom weight. His fingers fumbled for the delete button, but he couldn't bring himself to touch it.

He swallowed hard, the muscles in his throat constricting. His palms felt clammy, and he found he couldn't look away from the words. He rubbed his temples, a headache beginning to bloom behind his eyes. He wished the earth would swallow him whole.
