He stared at the announcement pinned to the departmental noticeboard, his jaw working silently. Dr. Anya Sharma, leaving for a position at MIT. A better position. It had to be better. He ran a hand through his already messy hair, leaving it standing on end.

He felt a prickle of sweat break out on his forehead. The lecture hall, usually so familiar, seemed alien and looming. The rows of empty seats stared back at him, accusing. He needed to get out, to breathe.

He pulled his jacket tighter around him, even though the air conditioning was set to a comfortable temperature. His steps were quick, almost frantic, as he headed towards the library, seeking refuge in the quiet stacks. But even the hushed whispers of students felt like a betrayal.
