The cheap linoleum flooring of the apartment suddenly felt cold beneath Leo’s bare feet. He’d just finished a late-night coding session, his mind humming with algorithms and solutions. Then the envelope, with its official-looking print, arrived. He slowly lowered himself onto the edge of his bed. The world seemed to dim. The rhythmic tapping of his keyboard, a comforting presence for hours, now mocked him.

He felt a deep, hollow ache in his chest, as if a vital organ had been abruptly removed. He stared at the eviction notice, his eyes unfocused. He began to rub his forehead in circular motions, then ran his hand through his short-cropped hair. His skin felt like it was crawling.

He stood and walked towards the window, staring at the street below. He needed air. He needed something. He felt so alone.
