The basement air smelled of mildew and forgotten things. Michael, flashlight beam dancing over cobweb-draped boxes, discovered his grandfather’s old briefcase. Inside, nestled amongst worn papers, was a letter. A letter of resignation. His grandfather, the stoic man of the sea, who’d captained ships for decades, describing his disillusionment with the maritime industry. The words were terse, filled with a deep weariness.

Michael's hands began to tremble. He set the briefcase down, suddenly aware of the echoing silence. He'd always envisioned his grandfather as an indomitable figure. But this letter… it painted a different picture, a portrait of a man worn down. He felt a strange unease that he couldn't explain.

He left the basement quickly, needing sunlight. The world outside felt very bright, almost too bright. He felt like he couldn't catch his breath. He had to sit down.
