The house seemed to shrink around David as he held the letter. It was from his grandmother. She was a woman who always took care of everything. David had always seen her as the glue that had held the family together. The letter, however, detailed a breakdown, a moment of utter exhaustion. She’d been ready to walk away.

He felt a tightness in his throat. He ran a hand through his hair, the paper crinkling in his grip. The words were simple, but the sentiment was shattering. He’d never seen this side of her, never even suspected it. The carefully curated memories of her became something very different.

He sank into a chair, his legs suddenly weak. The world outside seemed distant, muffled. He wanted to go outside, to be in a place where he didn't feel so… exposed.
