“Are you even listening?” Mia asked, her voice laced with a playful, yet accusatory, tone. Leo looked up, startled. He hadn’t heard a word of her recap of the new apartment. Her move to Florida, a place she was so excited about, seemed to have him in a daze.

He ran a hand through his hair, the gesture automatic, and he felt the small hairs on his arm stand up. The space around him was becoming very tight. The details of the move, her plans, the new place, all seemed to be blurring into one amorphous threat.

He took a deep breath, trying to steady his shaking hands. "Florida," he repeated, finally managing a weak smile. He wanted to say something, anything, but the words felt trapped somewhere in his throat.
