The letter was found inside a box of old photographs, nestled between a wedding invitation and a faded ticket stub. Maria didn’t recognize the handwriting on the envelope, but the name on the return address was familiar. She read the enclosed note, her fingers trembling. The apology, for a youthful indiscretion, was unwelcome and unwanted. She felt the blood drain from her face, leaving her chilled. She stood up, knocking over her chair in the process. She needed to move, to do something, anything to break the spell of the past. The walls of the room felt like they were slowly closing in.
