The basement was damp, smelling of mildew and old newspapers. Amelia unfolded the list, the paper brittle and thin beneath her fingertips. “Visit the Grand Canyon.” “Learn to speak Italian.” “Ride a hot air balloon.” Each item seemed to leap off the page, demanding attention. She swallowed hard, a cold knot forming in her stomach. She never knew her father this way, not this… purposeful. The weight of his unfinished dreams pressed upon her, a heavy shroud.

She went to the kitchen and grabbed a glass of water, her hand trembling so badly she spilled it. The simple act of pouring a drink became a difficult task. The water looked cold and unappealing. She sat at the table, the list open before her, its words like whispered secrets. The ticking of the grandfather clock in the hall seemed to amplify the silence.

She felt a sudden urge to run, to escape the house, the list, the feeling that she was being watched. She pushed back from the table, knocking over her chair, the sound echoing in the empty room. A feeling of dread washed over her, and she suddenly wished she could speak to him one more time.
