He’d always thought Mr. Henderson was a bit of a grouch. Now, looking at the security cameras discreetly mounted around the meticulously landscaped garden, Thomas wished he'd paid more attention. The size of the house itself hadn’t prepared him for the realization – a sprawling mansion hidden behind a deceptively modest facade. Thomas felt a prickling at the back of his neck, as if someone were watching him.

The knowledge gnawed at him. He’d shared a fence line with Mr. Henderson for five years. They’d exchanged pleasantries, complained about the weather, even helped each other with yard work. It felt like he’d been living next door to a stranger. He ran a hand through his hair, the gesture somehow frantic.

He found himself avoiding eye contact when he saw Mr. Henderson the next day. A polite nod from the older man, nothing more. Thomas mumbled a greeting, his voice tight, and hurried past. He couldn't shake the feeling of being…off.
