The hospital waiting room was a sea of muted colors and hushed tones. The fluorescent lights overhead cast a sickly yellow glow, exacerbating the sense of unease that had been clinging to him since the diagnosis. Every cough, every sigh, every rustle of a newspaper seemed to amplify his anxiety.

He felt a sudden chill, despite the stuffy air. He wrapped his arms around himself. His gaze swept the room, landing on a woman in the corner. She met his stare, and a flicker of understanding passed between them. Her face was pale, her expression tight.

He shifted uncomfortably in his chair, suddenly aware of the way his clothes felt against his skin. This wasn’t how he envisioned his day. He wanted to leave, right now. He wanted to scream.
