The harsh fluorescent light of the garage did little to soothe Alex's churning stomach. He’d stumbled upon Liam's list while hunting for a wrench. It lay nestled amongst old car parts and forgotten tools. He stared at it, the paper crinkling in his sweaty palm.

The first entry was innocuous enough: "Learn to surf." But then came, "Run a marathon." Liam, a man who preferred Netflix to exercise? Alex's breath hitched.

He moved on, his eyes scanning the list rapidly. “Visit every continent.” “Start a business.” Each item was a tiny, unwelcome revelation.

He suddenly felt claustrophobic in the cramped space. He slammed the list back into the box and backed away. A cold dread seeped into his bones. He wanted to understand, but he also didn't. He had a sudden urge to flee.
