Liam felt his stomach clench. He’d recognized the font instantly. His essay. "The Bridge Builder," now serving as an example of… what? He shifted in his seat, suddenly too warm despite the air conditioning blasting in the library.

He kept running a hand through his hair, a nervous habit he’d developed in college. It felt like someone had opened a window into his past, revealing his adolescent anxieties and dreams for all to see. He read his old words again, cringing with each sentence.

His palms were slick. He thought about the admissions officer who'd presumably chosen it, and a shiver ran down his spine. He wanted to vanish. He stood abruptly, knocking over his chair.
