The world felt… skewed. Chloe couldn't quite put her finger on it, but ever since the hammering started, everything felt slightly off-kilter. She found herself checking the locks on her doors, even though she always did. She glanced nervously at the windows every few minutes.

She tried to read, but the words swam before her eyes. Her hands, usually still, were restless, tapping against the table, drumming a silent rhythm on her thigh. She felt a vague anxiety, a sense of unease that coiled in her gut.

She finally gave up and went for a walk, hoping to distract herself. But the noise followed her, a constant presence. The rhythm of the construction seemed to be invading her thoughts, a relentless drumbeat that she couldn't escape.
