Liam slammed the door to the computer lab a little too hard. The sound reverberated through the mostly empty space. He hadn't meant to do it, but the force behind the action seemed to stem from someplace else.

He slumped into his usual chair, the plastic cold against his back. He opened the email again, as if the words might magically change. They didn't. His fingers drummed a frantic rhythm against the desk's surface. He ran a hand through his hair, tugging at the strands.

He stared at the screen, the cursor blinking mockingly on the blank page of a research paper he'd been avoiding. The deadline was looming. Everything was. He felt a hollowness in his stomach, as if he hadn't eaten in days.
