"So... what now?" Alex mumbled, the question directed at no one in particular. His voice was hoarse. He sat on the edge of his bed, staring at the floor.

He ran a hand through his hair, mussing it further. He'd been looking forward to this, the future stretched out, bright. The feeling had evaporated the moment he saw the email. He leaned forward, elbows on his knees, his shoulders slumped.

He picked up a loose thread from the comforter and started pulling at it, a slow, deliberate act. He felt cold, even though the room was warm. His plans, his dreams, were suddenly uncertain.
