The coffee shop buzzed with chatter, but Clara couldn't hear it. The barista’s cheerful greeting felt distant, a meaningless sound. The accusation, delivered in a terse email, had left her feeling adrift. She’d always prided herself on her academic integrity. Now, that reputation lay shattered.

She clutched her coffee cup so tightly her knuckles ached. The heat of the drink offered no comfort. She absently stirred the liquid, watching the cream swirl and dissipate, a visual representation of her own crumbling confidence. The faces of the other students, normally familiar and friendly, seemed to morph into expressions of judgment.

She felt a tremor in her hands, causing the cup to rattle against the saucer. She had to explain, to defend herself, but the words wouldn't come. Her mind was a jumble of anxieties, spinning wildly, and her chest felt tight.
