"So, the interview went well?" Emily asked, trying to sound casual as she stirred her tea. The teacup clattered against the saucer, a small, involuntary movement. She and Chloe hadn't spoken about the job since submitting their applications. The silence was louder than any conversation.

Chloe shrugged, a tight, controlled movement. Emily could see the strain in her eyes, the familiar lines deepening around her mouth. They were supposed to celebrate together, regardless of the outcome.

The sugar crystals at the bottom of the cup swam aimlessly. Emily felt an odd disconnect, like she was watching a play. The play was of her life. And she hated the ending.
