"Oh, God," Maya whispered, her knuckles white as she gripped her clutch. The words escaped her involuntarily, a soft expletive. Across the dance floor, bathed in the strobe lights, stood Daniel. He was laughing, dancing with a woman who was definitely not her.

Her carefully constructed facade of composure began to crack. She felt a sudden, almost desperate need to escape. The air seemed thick, heavy with unspoken history. She began to subtly edge towards the door, her movements hesitant, her periphery on high alert.

She caught his eye. His expression shifted, a flicker of surprise, a hint of something she couldn’t quite decipher. She quickly looked away, then felt the intense pressure behind her eyes, the familiar weight of unshed tears.
