He’d always been a creature of habit, David. The same route to work, the same brand of coffee, the same time for his evening run. Lately, though, everything had changed. He kept getting these calls, always at odd times. At the grocery store, at the gym, even during their movie nights. Each time he’d step aside, speaking in hushed tones, his face unreadable.

She found herself checking his phone while he showered. Her fingers trembled as she scrolled through the call history. Just work contacts, mostly. Still, the blankness of his gaze, the way he seemed to disappear into his own world, sent a shiver down her spine.

He had promised her dinner at that new Italian place, but when he got home from work, he said he was feeling tired and went straight to bed. When she went to check on him, she found him staring at the ceiling, his jaw clenched, as though the air around him had grown too thick to breathe.
