The air in the car felt thick, suffocating. Sarah was usually a composed woman, but today, her hands were slick with sweat. Michael had been receiving texts all week, and each time, he'd turn away, shielding his screen. She hadn’t asked, she couldn’t. The thought of confronting him felt like standing on the edge of a cliff.

He said he was working late again, for the third time this week. He had barely spoken to her, as he got ready to leave. When he left, she felt a burning sensation in her chest. She grabbed his phone and unlocked it.

She saw the notifications, the emojis, the names she didn’t recognise. She felt her face go numb. It was as if someone had punched her in the gut. She knew, with a certainty that chilled her to the core, that something was profoundly wrong.
