The scent of his cologne hung in the air after he left, mocking her. It usually comforted her, filled her with a sense of calm. Now, it only made her throat tighten. George had been secretive, pulling away. He'd been taking his calls in the shed, a place he never used to go.

She had peeked through the window once, when he didn’t know she was there. He was laughing. It was a laugh she didn’t recognize.

She wandered through their home, touching the objects they’d collected together, the photographs, the souvenirs. They felt distant, alien. She wanted to shatter something, anything. Instead, she sat on the floor, and started to cry.
