The house seemed to shrink around her. The familiar layout of the rooms felt confusing, labyrinthine. David’s phone calls. They were always brief, urgent. He'd step outside, talking in hushed tones, his body language tense.

She’d been watching him, a shadow in the periphery of his life. She’d tried to ignore the growing dread, but it was a living thing, feeding on her thoughts. She felt a pressure in her chest, a physical weight.

The other night, she'd grabbed her coat and walked out the door, into the cold night. She needed to breathe, to escape the suffocating atmosphere of their home. She didn’t know where she was going, she just knew she couldn't stay.
