“Are you sure?” Mark asked, his voice strained. He stared at the photograph in his hands. It showed him and Ethan, young and beaming, standing beside a battered old car. Ethan had always described their cross-country road trip as an amazing journey filled with music, laughter, and endless adventure. Mark, however, remembered it as a stressful ordeal marked by constant breakdowns, arguments, and near-starvation.

Mark felt a strange prickling sensation on his skin. He set down the picture and ran a hand over his face. The air in his apartment felt stale and heavy. He felt a profound sense of isolation. His chest felt constricted.

He looked at the open road map on his table, unsure if it was real or a twisted dream.
