Agnes stared at the glossy magazine spread, a tremor running through her. The "Velvet Dream Cake," it proclaimed, the latest sensation in New York's pastry scene. The photograph was undeniable: a towering confection of chocolate and cream, exactly as she'd always made it. She ran a hand through her hair, a nervous gesture she hadn't realized she was making. Her grandmother's recipe, her secret, was splashed across the pages, yet credited to someone else entirely. A knot formed in her stomach.

The bakery across the street, “Sugar & Spice,” had been quiet all day, its usual cheerful chatter replaced with a hushed air. Agnes’s fingers drummed on the kitchen table. She’d spent years perfecting that cake, the one she’d sold in small batches from her own, humble shop. She felt a prickling heat crawling up her neck, a feeling of unease that refused to dissipate.
