The hum of the auction house filled the air, a low thrum that vibrated through David’s bones. He clutched his father’s pocket watch, the cold metal a small comfort against his clammy hand. He’d come to watch the bidding, to somehow try and influence the outcome.

He kept swallowing hard, his throat tight. He hadn’t spoken much since he learned his sister was selling the watch. He felt like his stomach was twisting. The auctioneer’s voice, crisp and professional, was a steady drumbeat of his anxiety.
