He stared at the blueprints, his brow furrowed. The architect’s jargon swirled around him, a meaningless hum. He pushed the papers away from him. He couldn’t seem to concentrate. A coldness had crept into his core, a disquieting weight that made him feel… off.

He walked the perimeter of the property, kicking at loose gravel. The developers were offering a good price, more than fair. His rational mind knew this. Yet, he felt a knot of resistance, a stubborn refusal to let go.

He ran a hand through his hair, tugging at the strands. The rhythmic motion did nothing to quell the internal flutter. He remembered his father's workshop in the old garage, the scent of sawdust and linseed oil. That whole world – gone. He closed his eyes.
