The drive home felt interminable. Mark gripped the steering wheel so tightly that his knuckles were white. The news had come just before his evening shift at the diner. The scholarship was gone. Someone else's name, someone else's life. He would need to quit school, likely, and work full-time.

The familiar houses whizzed by, but he didn't recognize them. He felt a hollowness in his chest. His usual sense of direction was replaced with a sense of being lost. The sky was the wrong shade of blue. Everything felt out of alignment.
