The drive home felt interminable. David gripped the steering wheel so tightly that his knuckles ached. The highway blurred past, a stream of speeding cars and flashing lights. His jaw was clenched, his teeth grinding together. He had been planning to send the grocery list to his wife. Instead, the text had gone to his mother.

He envisioned her response. A phone call, immediately followed by judgment and unsolicited advice. He pictured the disappointment in her eyes. The thought made his stomach clench. He felt a sudden pressure behind his eyes, a familiar burning sensation he hadn't experienced in years.
