The paper crackled in Elias’s trembling hands. He reread the words: “...must vacate premises within thirty days.” His stomach lurched, a cold knot forming in the pit. The chipped mug on the table, usually a comfort, now seemed mocking, its emptiness mirroring his own future. He pushed it away, the sound amplified in the sudden quiet of the apartment. He rose, pacing, each footfall a heavy beat against the worn floorboards.

He yanked open the window, gulping down the cool night air. Below, the city roared, a symphony of horns and sirens that suddenly felt menacing. He ran a hand through his hair, the strands rough against his scalp. What was he going to do? Where could he go? The weight of it pressed down, stealing the breath from his lungs.
