The chipped mug warmed Amelia's hands, but the heat didn't seem to penetrate the chill that had settled in her chest. Liam’s news hung heavy in the air, a silent weight she kept trying to shrug off. She swirled the lukewarm tea, the clinking of the spoon a nervous rhythm. Across the table, Liam was talking about the amazing job opportunity, the vibrant city, the future. Amelia just stared, a strange emptiness echoing in her ears.

Later, she found herself reorganizing her bookshelf, something she rarely did. Books she’d read a hundred times, titles she barely remembered, all had to be exactly placed. Each one meticulously aligned with the spine next to it. She was trying to create order in the chaos, trying to find a solid ground.

The evening arrived, painting the sky a bruised purple, and the silence in her apartment suddenly felt enormous. She turned on the television and watched a show she didn't care about, the images blurring into meaningless patterns.
