The phone call had ended, but the echo of Leo’s voice still reverberated in her mind. Chloe walked through her apartment, the familiar rooms suddenly unfamiliar. She was not able to sit down. She looked out the window, at the buildings, and it felt like she had been dropped in a strange, unknown place.

She opened and closed her kitchen drawers, checking for items, as if that would bring some sense of order. She ate a handful of cereal, without any milk, and then threw the box away, not wanting to think about it.

That night, she couldn't sleep. She tossed and turned, replaying the conversation in her head. The apartment seemed to be suffocating her. The blankets felt heavy. The darkness pressed in.
