He was halfway through a business trip, sitting in a sterile hotel room, when the email arrived. The words were simple, the sentiment clear. The impact, however, was a seismic jolt. He’d never anticipated this. This was a violation. James felt the world tilt.

He tried to go back to work. He opened the files on his laptop, but the words swam before his eyes. He got up from the table, pacing the room, feeling trapped. The hotel room was all right angles and shadows, and he felt as though the very walls were closing in on him.

He slammed his fist on the desk. He needed air. He needed a way out.
