The emptiness was the worst part. He had anticipated the visual impact, the sudden absence of the familiar form. But the absence was not just visual. It was a space inside of him, a hollowness that echoed through his entire being.

He touched the rough surface of the stump, the scent of fresh cut wood filling his nostrils. It was a smell that brought an old, forgotten memory to the surface. He couldn't quite grasp it, yet the fleeting glimpse left him feeling even more adrift.

He turned away from the stump. His shoulders slumped. He felt a deep, profound sense of displacement, as if the ground beneath him had shifted.
