The siblings, Marcus and Fiona, had always been estranged. Their parents' death had only deepened the rift. The will was read. Marcus inherited the family's successful law practice, a career path he had always desired. Fiona received a single, ornate key.

Fiona stared at the key. The lawyer had no explanation for it. It was made of tarnished silver and had an unusual, unfamiliar shape. The key seemed to hum with a strange energy.

Marcus scoffed. "Well, that's useless, isn't it?"

Fiona said nothing. But when she returned to the house, every lock on every door felt taunting, and she was sure that they were all waiting.
