The news had hit Emily hard. She had always loved the charm of the Victorian house, the intricate woodwork, the tall windows, the rambling garden. But the newspaper article, the one detailing the cold case of a missing person, whose remains were later found in the basement, had changed everything.

She found herself avoiding the basement. Previously a storage space, it was now a place of dread. Even the scent of damp earth and old wood sent a ripple of unease through her.

She stood in her kitchen, chopping vegetables for dinner, and her hand trembled. She was suddenly acutely aware of how isolated she was, living at the edge of town, on a large plot of land.
