Gemotions

The aroma of coffee, usually comforting, turned acrid in the air. Liam sat hunched over the kitchen table, the notebook open before him. "See a Broadway show." He knew he never took his wife, Maya, to the theater. "Travel to Japan." He had always said he was too busy. The words seemed to mock him, highlighting his neglect.

He picked at a loose thread on the tablecloth, his fingers fidgeting. He felt as if he had been living in a dream, and this list was the rude awakening. He saw the way she looked at him, and realised she was more complex than he gave her credit for.

He closed his eyes, a feeling of lightness and… something else he couldn't name, like fear.
