He reread the notice, the words burning into his brain. "Opportunity," they called it. The word tasted like ash in his mouth. He walked through his apartment, touching the familiar objects. Each item was a memory.

He felt a sudden urge to get rid of things, to purge himself of anything that might make the move more difficult. He filled several garbage bags. The act, however, didn’t alleviate the weight. It only increased his unease.

He sat on his balcony, staring at the cityscape, feeling an intense disconnect from the world around him. His sanctuary, his safe place, was about to become someone else's. The thought made his stomach churn.
