Gemotions

The news of her promotion had been bittersweet. She had worked hard for years, but the accompanying responsibility was already crushing. Emma found herself staring blankly at the colorful scribbles on her fridge, courtesy of her niece. There, in the corner of a particularly messy scene, was the familiar outline of a stick figure with a huge, triangular head. It was Bartholomew, her imaginary friend, her protector from childhood. A wave of nausea washed over her.

She had fought so hard to leave her past behind. To become successful, to shed the awkwardness and fear that had defined her youth. The drawings felt like a betrayal, a mocking reminder of who she used to be. The weight of the world felt especially heavy today.

She closed her eyes, trying to focus on her breathing.
