The phone rang incessantly, journalists clamoring for an interview. Emily felt her body tense, a physical manifestation of her inner turmoil. On the coffee table lay the offending object: “Emily Stone: The Unfinished Symphony.” Her cheeks burned.

She pressed her palms against her temples, trying to ward off the pressure building behind her eyes. The house felt suffocating. The phone continued to ring, a constant, irritating reminder.

She wanted to disappear, to crawl into a hole and vanish. She considered unplugging the phone, but the thought of the silence was just as daunting.
