The news hit him like a physical blow. The email. The congratulations. It was Sarah. He had been so sure. He replayed the interview in his mind, searching for clues, for any sign of failure. He found nothing.

He slammed his fist on the desk, scattering papers. The impact sent a sharp pain up his arm. He clenched his jaw, trying to contain the fury. He had worked so hard. He wanted this.

He rose from his chair and began to pace the room. The familiar space suddenly felt alien, the walls closing in. He felt a primal urge to destroy something, to lash out at the injustice of it all.
