"God, here we go," muttered Jake, his voice barely a whisper. He’d known, logically, that bumping into Chloe at this wedding was a distinct possibility. They shared mutual friends, after all. But logic had deserted him the instant he saw her across the room. He felt a chill run down his spine.

He took a large gulp of his beer, the bitterness doing nothing to quell the internal turmoil. He kept his eyes on his feet, avoiding any potential contact. He was going to spend the whole night feeling like this.

He focused on the patterns in the carpet, counting the squares. The world felt distorted, the joyous atmosphere an irritating irritant. He wished he could teleport away.
