The scent of jasmine, usually a comfort, now felt cloying. Clara paced the length of their small apartment, the hardwood floors creaking under her hurried steps. David had been unusually distant all week, but this…this felt different. She’d heard him in the back garden, voice low and murmuring, hidden from view.

She glanced at the phone again, the unanswered call log staring back at her. Her fingers trembled as she reread the name; *Unknown*. Anger flared, a hot prickling sensation behind her eyes. He had the gall to hide something from her?

She grabbed the bottle of wine, a sharp intake of breath escaping her as she uncorked it, the metallic tang of the cap filling her mouth. The need to scream was almost unbearable.
