The house seemed too quiet, the silence almost deafening. Maria heard the tell-tale beep of a new text message. She saw her husband, Daniel, quickly hide his phone in the pocket of his jeans. It was a subtle movement, a nervous gesture that immediately raised alarm bells in her mind.

She walked towards him, a fake smile plastered on her face. Her throat felt tight, a band of cold steel wrapped around her neck. She asked him about his day and tried to sound normal.
