“How could they?” Alex muttered under his breath, his voice barely a whisper. The question echoed in the sudden silence of his apartment. His face was hot, a dull throbbing sensation behind his eyes.

He felt a knot forming in his throat, making it difficult to breathe. The words from his diary, now broadcast to the world, were like a chorus of mocking voices in his head. His past was now fuel for derision.

He kicked a nearby bin, sending it clattering across the floor. He wanted to break something, to obliterate the source of his torment. He needed to get away from everything.
