From his new corner office in Human Resources, David could see his old team across the building. The distance, both physical and metaphorical, felt like a gaping wound. He hadn't wanted this. He'd poured his heart into the Engineering department, loved the camaraderie and the shared goals.

He felt the prickle of tears behind his eyes and quickly blinked them away. He knew that the transfer was meant to be a promotion, a step up the corporate ladder. Yet it felt like a demotion, a betrayal.

He leaned back in his chair, trying to compose himself. He had to appear strong, professional. The phone on his desk rang, jarring him from his thoughts. He took a long, steadying breath before answering it.
