“No, no, no,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. The brightly colored cake, with its painstakingly crafted frosting flowers, now seemed to mock her from its place on the table. Emily pushed the plate away, the thought of food making her feel sick. The party hats she’d bought, the noisemakers, the silly little trinkets… they all suddenly felt childish and absurd. She slumped into a chair, the room spinning slightly around her. Her hands felt clammy, and a cold sweat trickled down her spine.
