The attic was a labyrinth of shadows and discarded objects. John surveyed the area, a sense of mounting frustration coiling in his gut. He hadn't expected this.

A discarded diary lay open on a shelf, its pages filled with intimate details of someone else’s life. He slammed the cover shut, the sound echoing in the silence. He was supposed to be creating a new home, a new life.

"Ridiculous," he spat, his voice laced with annoyance. He wanted to burn everything, to obliterate the evidence of someone else's existence.

He left the attic, the door swinging shut behind him.
