"Damn it," Maya muttered, slamming the door of her apartment. The argument with her boyfriend had left her heart aching. The sting of his words echoed in her ears, each one a fresh wound. She slumped onto the worn couch, the threadbare fabric offering little comfort.

She needed to clear her head, a walk might help. Stepping outside, she noticed the glint of something on the sidewalk, a flash of brown leather. Curiously, she knelt down.

The wallet was thick, bulging. She peeked inside, her breath catching in her throat. Hundreds, maybe thousands, of dollars. Enough to fix the leaky roof, to finally replace the broken washing machine. A quick calculation – freedom.

She traced the embossed initials on the wallet's surface, her fingers trembling. The possibilities swirled, a dizzying array of escape routes. Her stomach twisted, not with hunger, but with the pressure of a difficult decision.
