"Unbelievable," Mark grumbled, running a hand through his already disheveled hair. His car had broken down, again, and the mechanic's estimate was astronomical. He felt a deep sense of helplessness.

He was kicking at a pebble when he noticed the wallet. It was a stylish, expensive one, lying discarded on the curb.

He opened it, and his jaw dropped. The amount of cash inside was staggering, more than he had ever seen in one place. He closed his eyes, his pulse quickening. A sudden, sharp image of his family, the smiles, their hopes.

His breath hitched. He fought the sudden surge of adrenaline. He was caught in a crosscurrent of desperation and the voice of a different kind of conscience. He tried to think, but his thoughts were all scrambled.
